The Texas Rangers are a baseball team based in Arlington, Texas located in the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The Rangers are currently a member of the West division of the American League (AL) in Major League Baseball (MLB). Since 1994, the Rangers have played in Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas. The team's name is borrowed from the famous law enforcement agency of the same name.
The franchise began life in 1961 as the Washington Senators which was an expansion team awarded to Washington DC after the original Washington Senators were transformed into the Minnesota Twins. The new Senators spent ten years in the nation’s capital until making the move to Arlington and becoming the Rangers in 1972. Since 2014 the Rangers have played their home games in Globe Life Park in Arlington which also houses the Texas Rangers Baseball Hall of Fame
The Texas Rangers Baseball Club has made seven appearances in the MLB postseason, six following division championships in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2010, 2011, and 2015 and as a Wild Card team in 2012. In 2010, the Rangers advanced past the Division Series for the first time, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays. Texas then brought home their first American League pennant after beating the New York Yankees in six games. In the 2010 World Series, the franchise's first, the Rangers fell to the San Francisco Giants in five games. They repeated as American League champions the following year, then lost the 2011 World Series to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games. The Series was noted for its back-and-forth Game 6, in which the Rangers lost twice a two-run lead in the bottom of the ninth inning, then did it again in the 10th. In both innings, the Rangers were one strike away from their first World Series championship.
Although the two tries at the World Series have ended in defeat, the Rangers have had quite a great deal of success over the years. Here are some pen portraits of just a few of their leading players:
Ivan Pudge Rodriguez featured for the Rangers for twelve seasons. He led Texas to their first, second and third AL West titles in 1996, 1998 and 1999. Rodriguez won 13 Gold Glove awards, including 10 in a row with the Rangers from 1992 to 2001, and remains one of the only catchers who can claim to throw out Rickey Henderson twice in one game.
Juan Gonzalez was one of the most feared hitters in the American League throughout the 1990’s. Juan also won two MVP awards—the most by any Ranger in history. His feared bat helped lead Texas to all three AL West championships in the late 1990’s.
Michael Young has hit .300 or better in seven of his 11 full MLB seasons—all of which have been with the Rangers. Young has been a perennial All-Star, making it to six consecutive games from 2004-2009.
Alex Rodriguez had three of his best years with Texas, winning two Gold Glove Awards at shortstop and the AL MVP in 2003. He also appeared in three All-Star games and hit 156 home runs in just three seasons.
